Get the Right Kind of Help for Paranoia

Get the Right Kind of Help for Paranoia

In the UK, at least 1 in every 3 suffers from paranoid episodes. In the world, there are thousands of people who go through their days with great fear and trepidation. They are always on the lookout, they feel someone is going to harm them, and they usually withdraw themselves from others, especially from those they love the most. Their days pass by, missing a lot of opportunities along the way.

Paranoia is indeed a very serious mental disorder that needs to be treated right away. Otherwise, the person would never learn to enjoy quality of life.

What is paranoia?

In order to have the right kind of help, it is important that you understand what paranoia is. It is a mental disorder characterized by delusion of any kind. The person may feel like someone is trying to steal him or her away from his or her family. Thus, he or she may be very distant and sometimes aggressive toward acquaintances and strangers.

This is quite different from schizophrenia, since the sufferer only has a very solid type of paranoia. Moreover, it happens very gradually and does not include hallucination.

What can you do?

A paranoid person usually does not have any clue that he or she is already suffering from it. Thus, it is very difficult for the sufferer to get the right treatment on his or her own. You need to help. Fortunately there are plenty of things you can do:

Be with him or her during sittings and treatments. So you can ensure that the sufferer goes through all his or her medications and other forms of treatment, you need to accompany him or her at all times. This will also give you a chance to get to know more about the illness. The more you know about the disorder, the more you will have an idea on how you will be able to help.

Do not play along. Many families and friends make the mistake of playing along with the delusions of the sufferer. This will only worsen the problem, as it only justifies that what he or she is experiencing is completely real. You need to inform the sufferer regularly that his or her beliefs are not true. You cannot expect them to believe you, but hopefully as you insist on the truth, they may be able to realize it later.

Utilize affirmations or subliminal messages. Many of those who suffer from paranoia are individuals who have gone through terrible events in their lives. They may have been abused, rejected, unloved, and abandoned. These memories are deep seated and continue to linger, influencing the way they perceive things in their environment.

You can use affirmations or subliminal messages to reinforce positive emotions and feelings to them. Every day, make it a habit to let the sufferer listen to a series of positive statements such as "You are loved by many" or "The negative memories are being washed away." Make it a point to pick those messages that are positive in tone.
